We Will Never Forget: Tragedy at the Navy Yard

At 6 PM on September 16, 2014, the Capitol Riverfront community and nearby neighbors came together to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic Navy Yard shooting at a community event in Canal Park at Canal and L streets SE.

Many of our residents are military or retired military who served our country with dedication and honor. The Navy Yard is an important part of our community history and future. Our hearts go out to the Navy Yard families and colleagues of those impacted by the Navy Yard shooting.

VIPs and guest speakers at the event included Vice Admiral William Hilarides, Commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command, and District of Columbia government officials. The United States Navy Ceremonial Guard will support the commemoration with a color guard.

This memorial service included prayers, readings, meditation, and music to honor the Navy Yard victims, survivors and heroic civilian and military first responders who acted to save lives.
